The speaker is Tom Toles, his cartoon is directed toward Marine Corps soldiers and “Dr.” Donald Rumsfeld. This particular comic was published in the Washington Post, thus making the audience the readers of this paper. The text is short and simple. I feel the message Toles is sending through his cartoon is that our military leaders are disregarding the reason as to why our soldiers are coming back with missing limbs etc. Yes, the cartoon depicted makes a harsh statement towards the injured soldiers aswell as the military leaders, but it leaves you to realize why they are returning in that state. The war perhaps? 

After reading Einstein’s letter to Phyllis, I felt as though Einstein was using logos to try and say a simple “no” to Phyllis’ question asking whether scientists prayed or not. He used rational statements explaining that all things that happen can be explained using scientific logic. He also says that even after all the breakthroughs and discoveries made by science they (the scientists) have only partial knowledge from their work. I think it’s a bit of a mixed message Einstein sends in this letter, leaning towards implying that he does not pray, but he believes that at some point you reach a spiritual level where man can only go so far until the supernatural steps in.
